The Office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has been actively sharing details regarding the handling of insurgency and terrorism cases, particularly those linked to major massacres. According to a statement released on Sunday and obtained by TVC, the administration of President Bola Tinubu, which began in 2023, has been aggressively pursuing terrorists and insurgents. This is being achieved through stronger cooperation between various government agencies. The goal? To arrest, eliminate, and successfully convict those responsible for some of the most horrific attacks on Nigerian soil.
The statement highlights a critical statistic: “Since 2024, over 124 terrorists and insurgents have been successfully convicted.” But here's where it gets controversial: it's not just about convictions. The statement also mentions that trials are ongoing for individuals, including leaders of the Ansaru group and those involved in the Owo Church bombing of 2022, as well as the Yelwata (Benue) attacks.
To further protect lives and safeguard Nigeria's sovereignty, the government has implemented a range of measures. These include joint security task forces, enhanced border patrols with regional partners, compensation for victims, and intelligence sharing with international allies.
And this is the part most people miss: The data shows that Nigeria has seen an 81% decrease in terror-related deaths since 2015. This reflects improved counter-insurgency operations and better collaboration between national security forces and affected communities. Over 13,000 terrorists have been neutralized in the past year, and over 124,000 fighters and their families have surrendered to authorities. Furthermore, over 2.1 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) have returned home, with new communities being rebuilt in previously affected areas. The government has also launched a Resettlement Scheme to assist those impacted by conflict, helping them rebuild their lives and reintegrate into society.
